ICOSEAS Kaji Isu ASEAN
“Undoubtedly, Indonesia, being the biggest and the most populous country in the region is perceived as a natural de facto leader of ASEAN. Since ASEAN’s inception in 1967 until nowadays, Indonesia has played very important role in the solution of various problems that it faces both internally and vis a vis the external powers”. Demikian ungkap Drs. Mr.H.E.
“To conclude my remarks, allow me to make a very brief summary as follows: (i) for Indonesia, ASEAN Community with its 3 pillars has been an evolutionary process, for which Indonesia’s readiness to cope with will heavily depend on its competitiveness; (ii) President Joko Widodo’s pro-people diplomacy should not be narrowly interpreted into Indonesia’s disengagement from international arena. Instead, Indonesia would remain actively engage in various world issues and tries to significantly contribute for their solution”, pungkasnya.
“This paper finds out that one of the factors that has generated pessimism of ASEAN is ‘the functionalist trap’, namely the tendency of academics and researchers to use functionalism in discussing about regionalism in many lectures, academic papers, journal articles and books that make audience develop high expectations and make comparison between ASEAN and its successful counterpart in Europe. When they realize that ASEAN could not deliver many things as the European Union did, the feeling of frustration and disappointment start to mount. As a result some people begin to think that ASEAN is no longer relevant”, paparnya.
Pembicara lain yang turut mengkaji isu-isu seputar ASEAN dalam Open Lectures ICOSEAS yang dimoderatori oleh Ketua Prodi HI, Irawan Jati, S.IP., M.Hum., M.S.S., tersebut adalah Dr. Dafri Agussalim, MA (Kepala Pusat Studi ASEAN Universitas Gadjah Mada), Prof. Nopraenue Dhirarithiti (Mahidol University, Thailand) dan Rene L. Pattiradjawane (jurnalis senior KOMPAS, pendiri Kompas.Com dan Detik.Com).
